Sound Proofing and Acoustic Enhancements

To support the expanding curriculum and enable better quality teaching, many schools are installing bespoke music and recording studios. Education Spaces are experts in the design and installation of a vast array of sound insulation systems and acoustics enhancements. We have many years' experience in this field and will advise you in how best to achieve the desired levels of acoustic performance from your building, balanced against any other functional and budgetary constraints.

SIPs buildings are a great starting point

Thanks to the structural make-up of our buildings they perform extremely well in terms of sound absorption and sound proofing. The layered structure and differing densities of each SIP panel, (which form the walls ceilings and floors), block out a wide a spectrum of noise. Internally we add plasterboard and externally we install a breathable water proof membrane, timber battens and either kiln dried (fibrous) timber cladding or a polymer render. All these components enhance sound insulation.

Bespoke solution

Specialised buildings such as recording studios or music rooms, libraries or even classrooms close to a busy road, generally require further acoustic enhancement. Acoustic solutions are complex and endless, so we have created four packages scaling from basic sound proofing enhancements to high tech acoustic performance. If needed, we will cherry pick across all four packages to tailor your building to your exact requirement.

The packages are as follows:

BRONZE PACKAGE:

For general acoustic improvements, such as blocking out background traffic noise.

Floor: Acoustic underlay (5mm) (image 1)
Walls: 2 x acoustic plasterboard (12.5mm) (image 2)
Ceiling: 1 x acoustic plasterboard (12.5mm)

SILVER PACKAGE:

For better general acoustic enhancement and light use music rooms, drama classrooms etc.

Floor: Rubber underlay mat (6mm) (image 3)
Walls: - Resilient bar (13.5 mm) and acoustic plasterboard (12.5mm). Total = 26mm (image 8)
Ceiling: Resilient bar (13.5 mm) and acoustic plasterboard (12.5mm). Total = 26mm

GOLD PACKAGE:

Used for music rooms etc. where a good level of acoustic enhancement is required.

Floor: Rubber underlay mat (6mm) plus a layer of Acoustic rubber membrane (2.6mm self-adhesive). Total = 8.6mm
Walls: Fastener (with incorporated rubber de-coupler - image 10), metal furring strips (41mm) with infill of acoustic mineral wool (30mm), acoustic plasterboard (12.5mm) Total = 53.5mm (image 10)
Ceiling: Resilient bar (13.5mm) and acoustic plasterboard (12.5mm) Total = 26mm

PLATINUM PACKAGE:

Our ultimate solution for use in music/recording studios and where low frequency noise is an issue i.e. drumming rooms

Floor: 3-layer acoustic underlay mat (image 7)
Walls: Fastener (with incorporated rubber de-coupler), metal furring strips (41mm) with infill of acoustic mineral wool (30mm), acoustic plasterboard (12.5mm) - Acoustic rubber membrane (2.6mm self-adhesive) - Acoustic plasterboard (12.5mm). Total = 68.6mm
Ceiling: Acoustic rubber membrane (2.6mm self-adhesive) on SIP (Structural insulated panel), Resilient bar (13.5mm) and acoustic plasterboard (12.5mm). Total = 28.6mm

Highest quality acoustic materials

Acoustic self-adhesive membrane:

We use a very high performance 2.6mm thick acoustic membrane that improves both impact and airborne passage of sound. It is a high-density polymer based synthetic providing excellent acoustic insulation for walls floors and even ceilings. It is flexible and comes in an adhesive or non-adhesive form. Crucially, the product is fire resistant and self-extinguishing. (image 9)

Premium acoustic underlay:

Designed to combat both airborne and impact sound, our high premium soundproof underlay consists of high density rubber sandwiching an impact absorbing core. It can be laid under carpet or covered with a timber or laminate floor.

Rubber underlay matting:

Our high quality 6mm versatile matting is excellent at reducing impact sound yet provides a firm non-spongy feel to your floor. It is ideal for use with laminate flooring and when used in combination with the acoustic self-adhesive membrane, a considerable acoustic reduction in airborne and impact sound is achieved.

Minimal acoustic leak by design

All floors, walls, ceilings, floor and window/door reveals are separated by using acoustic silicon sealant as appropriate.
