Requirement
This school approached Education Spaces after seeing our stand at the Grand Designs Show London. Our senior designer met with key personnel on site and after in depth discussion and a few iterations designed this multifunctional bespoke standalone building. This impressive facility incorporates two adjoining classrooms, both with storage rooms and a kitchenette and access to an internal centralised toilet block. The design also incorporated a conjoining toilet block accessible from the playground and a First Aid room. Outside there is a wrap-around covered walk-way with stepped and ramped access and external LED downlights. The external finish blends well with the surroundings and is a mixture of kiln dried western red cedar and polymer render, with all door and window frames in anthracite grey uPVC. The build is characterised by masses of natural light from both glazed panels and ceiling light tubes, creating a spacious, bright and inviting environment for the young children.
Our Solution
• Two adjoining classrooms: Bright, warm and welcoming, these two sizeable classrooms (60m2 and 40ms) with their connecting entrance area, create a great learning environment.
• Internal toilet block: Accessible from both classrooms with 4 small toilets with low level doors and 4 low level sinks, plus a fully integrated disabled toilet.
• External toilet block: Three separate cubicles with adult toilets and compact sinks.
• First Aid room: Accessed via a wide glazed door with ultra-low threshold. An invaluable facility for this busy school, fitted with a sink and units at one end.
• Integral store cupboards: An essential, space efficient commodity with lockable doors.
• Integrated kitchenette: Both classrooms were furnished with kitchenettes, ideal for wet play, painting etc. and for snack preparation.
• Covered walk way: Being a standalone classroom, this give the children sheltered access and keeps parents out of the rain at pick up time! It is stepped on one side with gentle disabled ramp access, the other and attractive wooden safety balustrade (1.1m high).
• Glazing: Argon gas filled, heat reflective, thermal insulating, UV protective & easy clean high performance glazing throughout (u = 0.1 W/m2k), contributing to the outstanding energy performance of this building.
• Doors: All with ample width and ultra-low threshold for easy disabled access.
• Flooring: Our durable yet aesthetic 10mm v groove oak effect laminate is installed throughout. In the toilet blocks waterproof vinyl floors with cap coving for hygienic easy cleaning.
• Lighting: 7 light tubes, 14 fixed glazed panes and 10 top hung high opening windows ensure masses of natural light flood these class rooms and toilet areas. To enhance the natural light we installed highly efficient LED downlights and lux panel lighting that performs at under 5 W/m2.
