Wootton Primary, like so many schools, has a growing population so classroom space had become a critical issue. The dedicated head teacher and board of governors required a fit for purpose classroom, built to last, spacious, secure and economical to run. Our architect in close consultation with the school, submitted and managed the Planning Application and our associates took care of all Building Control elements of the project. In addition our build team liaised closely with the school’s own Facilities Management Company who took responsibility for certain fire safety installations. Finding suitable additional space within a school grounds can prove difficult and this project was no exception. We utilised an awkward configuration of relatively redundant sloping ground, under a tree, which would have unsuitable for a conventional construction. The finished stand-alone building, as with all our buildings, is a low maintenance, durable and highly thermally efficient multifunctional space that benefits from fabulous natural light and an expanse of partially covered decking.
Our Solution
- Non-slip composite decking: This decking is expertly installed to ensure it sits flush with the internal flooring. This not only minimises threshold trip hazards but effectively doubles the available classroom area when weather permits and the powder coated aluminium bifolds can be effortlessly pushed open.
- Indoor outdoor learning environment: A large roof overhang affords protection from the elements. Children love to learn outside and those hungry brains benefit from the oxygen boost of fresh air.
- Western Red Cedar Cladding: This FSC wood is a fabulous natural material. It lasts decades, maintenance free and adds to the thermal efficiency of the SIPs (structured insulated panels) of the building. It is kiln dried, so will not warp or swell, is secured with secret stainless steel fixings that do not bleed, it is incredibly robust with a fine even grain and holds anti-fungal properties.
- Low running costs: We use SBEM to ensure every design delivers A rated EPCs. Glazing is high performance (Argon filled, heat reflective, thermal insulating, UV protective) which, in partnership with the thermally efficient SIPs (structurally insulated panel) construction, minimises the energy required to maintain a perfect temperature all year round.
