Requirement

This primary school wanted to create more working space, so decided to make better use of an area of the playground that could be lost with minimal impact. The relatively small site is surrounded on three sides by other buildings, so the design was important in terms of maximising both light and use of available space. As the images reveal, this building was installed close to the boundary with a small gate giving side access, for the climate control unit and of course easy retrieval of stray footballs! Maximising internal space was a priority and to that end floor to ceiling integral cupboards were one of the many bespoke features of this design.

Our Solution

Roof lights: 6 roof light (each measuring 1m by 1m) ensured natural light floods this room despite its enclosed location.

Integral storage cupboards: Made to measure - these cupboards take up relatively little internal space yet provide immense storage space for the teachers.

Bespoke glazing with integral blinds: The Long narrow windows across the front elevation are of high performance laminated glass and sized as such to minimise the risk of being hit by playground balls. The integral blinds are controlled by internal magnetic mechanisms and are maintenance free

Access: Stepped and ramped access to a wide low threshold entrance for full accessibility. Attractive cedar fencing along the ramp gives added protection from the playground.

External finish: This is kiln dried cedar cladding, fixed with secret stainless steel pins and maintenance free.

Flooring: Barrier matting at the entrance with the rest of the room in a durable vinyl flooring.

Energy efficient design: 7 Lux panels (600 by 600mm) and 4 external LED down-lights were installed, giving low energy lighting that performs at under 5 W/m2. In addition, 7 double power sockets were fitted. We use SBEM calculations to ensure our buildings are compliant with Energy Consumption and Emissions Regulation.

Climate control: A Hitachi Shirokuma 'A+' energy condenser installed by climate control experts, enabling fine control of both humidity and temperature.
