Requirement
This Primary school had, like so many schools, very close ties to its local community, not least the families of children attending or destined to attend the school. They therefore wished to create a multipurpose building for their pupils and the wider community. The main building was envisaged to include an office, a kitchenette, disabled access and a disabled toilet and two large areas for use as classrooms, a meeting place for families and local groups and a crèche. Here are some of the many features incorporated into this fabulous multi-functional facility.
Our Solution
- Great Light and Space: A feeling of openness and a connection with the outdoors pervades this building. It was purposefully designed to be flooded with natural light from the array of apertures: Glazed panels, French doors, bi-folding doors, roof lights and windows. In addition, for gloomier days, there is a mixture of strip lights and LED down lighters.
- A substantial roof overhang: We designed one side of the building with a large, structurally reinforced, roof overhang below which is an expanse composite non-slip decking. This provides sheltered outdoor space for lessons and play, regardless of weather.
- Bi-folding doors: When temperatures permit, the bifold doors can be opened onto this sheltered decked area, almost doubling the classroom space for the teachers and children to utilise, with the added stimuli of fresh air.
- Disabled access: The wide ramp allows easy access through large electric double doors. These doors can be opened by means of a coded key pad, giving individuals greater independence into and out of the building.
