Requirement
Little Elms is an established chain of successful family run nurseries. Little Elms nursery in Lee is a converted Victorian building that opened in 2010. Demand for places at this fabulous facility is high and so the nursery approached Education Spaces to discuss how they could make better use of the court yard to the rear of the property. We carried out a site survey and together with the staff designed a bespoke standalone preschool building with its own integral toilet, that fitted snuggly at the bottom of the courtyard, leaving space for the children to play.
Our Solution
• Light well: This 1200 by 600mm ceiling light floods the room with natural light despite the enclosed position.
• Windows: These half height windows across the front give plenty of light but leave usable wall space below for desks, chairs or equipment etc. The upper panes are top hung openers enabling good ventilation.
• Glazing: Argon gas filled, heat reflective, thermal insulating, UV protective & easy clean high performance glazing throughout (u = 0.1 W/m2k)
• Heating: This day care unit, like all our buildings, is extremely thermally efficient. As such minimal energy is required to finely tune the ambient temperatures throughout the year. This is achieved with a wall hung convector heater.
• Integral Toilet: Fully accessible with extra width door for disabled use. (NB: Images show pipework prior to boxing in.)
• Access: The glazed door has toughened safety glass giving maximum light and the ultra-low threshold gives easy disabled access when required.
• Flooring: An oak effect 10mm laminate flooring. Incredibly durable and easy to clean.
• Lighting & power: The design incorporated 14 internal and 4 external energy efficient aurora LED downlights and 5 double power sockets.
